Isn’t life interesting? Mrs B and I had dinner with a friend of hers who is gay this week who introduced us to his long-term partner, a senior manager in a large PLC.

We chatted about his work and Mrs B’s garden and what I was doing with the dogs and they told us of their plans for the summer. I enjoyed the evening immensely.

Finally, they invited us to their engagement party but we were unable to go as I have commitments elsewhere. They then asked if we would attend their wedding and we were delighted to accept. These were two people clearly in love and committed to each other. It’s not as if the world is overrun with either.

They are not doing this to make a point or attract attention, it’s a statement of their dedication to each other.

I wasn’t sure about calling it marriage but what the hell. There are a lot more important issues demanding our attention like the enforced betrothal of young girls and the abuse of women.

We’ve got Tony Blair brazenly strutting the world stage after dragging us into a disastrous war that killed and maimed thousands, and old folks starved and neglected in hospitals charged with their care.

I’m hardly likely to argue with a bit more love and devotion.

If it brings more kindness and tolerance into the world, it’s fine by me.
