I’m glad Macclesfield Football Club has been saved from financial collapse – really glad.

The club has a long and proud history and we don’t want to lose it.

I’m not so sure the rest of the borough will see it this way though.

If they’ve recently been informed their leisure centre is too costly to run they might wonder why Cheshire East Council handed over £285k to Macclesfield Town who are in the same dire financial situation.

They may ask how a council constantly pleading poverty found such a large sum for a football club while slashing services and refusing so many other worthy pleas for financial assistance.

Taxpayers may question why Cheshire East Council bought the stadium at this particular moment and where the new stadium is likely to be?

They may also question why opposition councillors were omitted from such an important discussion.

The deal means CEC will acquire the freehold of the existing stadium and site, so that the club can consolidate its debts. How many other organisations would welcome such an opportunity?

Sadly, they are not going to get it and I suspect they will want to know why.  They will certainly be interested in the criteria used in the selection process?
