A man was rescued by firefighters after failing to wake up when his smoke alarm sounded.

Quick-thinking neighbours heard the alarm going off at the house on Oxford Road, Macclesfield, at about 4am this morning (Tuesday).

They alerted fire crews, who broke into the property as smoke filled the kitchen.

Firefighters finally woke the occupant who was then led to safety.

The alarm was sounding because of unattended cooking.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire Service said: “A neighbour heard the alarm sounding and dialed 999.

“On arrival the firefighters wore breathing apparatus and got into the property via the back door to turn the cooker off.

“They then went upstairs and found the man in bed.”

Police attended and shut off the road for about an hour while two fire crews from Macclesfield used a large fan to remove smoke from the property.
