More than 1,000 young people and their parents attended the launch of a new project aimed at getting them into work.

The students from schools across town filed into Macclesfield Town Hall to join the Macclesfield Pledge.

Nearly 90 businesses and organisations have signed up to the pledge which promises to give every young person in Macclesfield the chance to learn new skills and have a job or further training.

The organisations are offering training, work placements, apprenticeships, support and advice whilst businesses get enthusiastic young employees of the future.

Cheshire East Mayor coun Hilda Gaddum and Macclesfield Town mayor councillor Liz Durham welcomed pupils and staff from secondary schools, sixth forms, colleges and local Universities.

After the launch ceremony the first Your Futures Careers Fair was held where students met representatives from the businesses.

Former headteacher Trevor Langston, who is leading the Macclesfield Pledge, said: “It was great to see so many partners coming together to work in collaboration. I can’t wait to get started in really helping the young people and businesses in the town. A planning meeting for interested businesses and educational providers to draw up the menu for the coming twelve months will be held on March 9.”

Organisers say feedback from organisations and educators has been positive.

Stephanie Allen of Macclesfield College said: “The Your Futures Careers Fair was a fantastic opportunity for all companies, colleges and schools to network together and encourage young people to explore new career paths. I was also very proud of our students who provided fantastic catering and front of house support to the fair.”

Emmanuel Botwe, headteacher at Tytherington School, said: “The Macclesfield Pledge Careers Fair today was brilliant. Our students came back absolutely buzzing.”
