The Artisan Market is moving - again.

The monthly market originally took place on Saturdays, but was moved to Sundays after businesses complained about a drop in sales.

Now market organiser Denise Valente, working with Wilmslow Town Council, has made a u-turn on the decision made a year ago and decided to move the market back to Saturdays - this time at a new location.

The decision to move the market to Sunday came after Wilmslow Town Council spent £3,000 on a survey of shop owners who opposed the market on their busiest day.

But the Sunday market soon saw a drop in footfall and stallholders complained about reduced sales. Mrs Valente was concerned Wilmslow may lose the market altogether.

Now Mrs Valente says she has come up with a solution.

The market will move back to Saturdays, but will take place on the service road which runs alongside the main Alderley Road instead of on Grove Street. There will be stalls from Sainsbury’s to Multiyork.

Mrs Valente said: “We’ve come up with a fantastic solution which addresses the concerns originally raised by retailers.

“When the decision was made to move to Sunday, the hope was that it would transform Sundays in Wilmslow into a seventh trading day, that shops would open with the new footfall.

“We’ve given it 12 months, but even though a few shops tried it, it didn’t work.

“The people of Wilmslow overwhelmingly want it back on a Saturday.”

The new-look market – which will have fewer traders – will be run as a pilot. Mrs Valente and the town council will monitor how it goes from month to month.

The on-street parking spaces along the service road will be lost when the market is on, but Mrs Valente hopes businesses with car parks can provide alternative spaces.

She said: “We need to make sure the market doesn’t cause problems for the retailers or the public and it will be looked at carefully month by month.

“The new market will have only the most diverse, high-quality producers – a market for Wilmslow to be proud of.

“We hope everyone turns out to support the market. It’s so important for the town.”

The Artisan Market is on Saturday, October 18, from 10am to 4pm.
