An elderly man escaped from a blaze which tore through his bungalow.

The man, reported to be in his 90s, was alerted to the fire at his dorma bungalow at Burton Drive in Poynton by smoke alarms fitted at the property.

Fire crews from Cheshire and Manchester fire services attended at just before 8.10am and found the man outside the property which was full of smoke.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital.

Crews used two hose reel jets and an ultra high lance to extinguish a fire.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident would have been worse if the property had not been fitted with smoke alarms which alerted the man to the fire. They were installed by the fire service two years ago.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
