A TENACIOUS teaching assistant has conquered Africa’s highest mountain to raise money for her school.
Suzi McNulty, 39, a teaching assistant at Park Lane School in Macclesfield, fulfilled a lifelong dream by climbing Kilimanjaro and has raised more than £4,000 in the process.
Teaming up with eight strangers via adventure travel company G Adventures, she traversed forest, moorland and alpine desert, reaching altitudes of 5,895m and facing temperatures plummeting to -100C.
She said: Making it to the highest summit, ‘Uhuru’ in six days, was a fantastic feeling but very tough. I was exhausted, walking for more than seven hours in the dark on the last night with really thin air which made it difficult to breathe.
“But the thought of my children Joe, 12, and Lucy, 10 and the schoolchildren kept me going.”
Suzi, from Congleton, was inspired to do the climb after watching celebrities do it for Children In Need.
She said: “The highlight was waking up and seeing clouds just sitting beneath you.”
The money will be used to buy school playground equipment for wheelchair users.
