A 14-year-old schoolboy has raised £700 by having his long hair cut off to help the victims and families of the devastating Bosley wood flour mill explosion in July.

James Gilliver, who lives on Thirlmere in Macclesfield with his older brother Maxwell, 15, and mum and dad Sue and Ken, has had long, curly locks for the last five years but made the brave decision to abandon his crowning glory for the Bosley fundraising appeal, set up by parish councillor Sylvia Jenkinson.

Hair by Lindsay, on Chestergate, where he had his hair cut, have also arranged for it to be used to make four wigs for children with cancer.

Dad Ken, a trustee of East Cheshire Hospice, said: “It was a major sacrifice for James but he is delighted to have raised so much money and we are so proud of him as it was entirely his initiative. “We always said we were fine with him having long hair as long as it was clean but he was thinking of having it cut and when the explosion happened he said he wanted to do it for Bosley.” The Macclesfield Academy pupil will be invited onto the pitch at the ex-professionals versus Bosley players charity football match at Moss Rose on Sunday.
