A daredevil moggy hitched a ride across Macclesfield – in the engine of a resident’s car.

Steven Goldstraw was driving home after walking his dog, Cassie, in South Park when he heard a strange sound coming from his car.

And after pulling over to investigate the unusual wailing, he discovered a seven-week-old kitten nestled in the inner workings of his engine.

Steven says he has no idea how the panicked pussy - nicknamed ‘Lucky’ - managed to find its way into his motor.

The 55-year-old, of Cleaver Mews, Macclesfield, said: “I went to South Park to walk my dog. I was there about an hour, and then as I was driving home I kept hearing this strange cry – I thought it was a bird at first.

“Eventually I pulled over as the cries didn’t stop. I lifted up the bonnet and there the kitten was, sat on the ledge of the chassis right next to where the radiator is spinning round.

“I have no idea how he didn’t get injured, I must have driven for about two- and-a-half miles.

“They say cats have nine lives, well I think he has definitely used one of them.”

After getting home and giving the kitten some food and water, one of Steven’s neighbours, Rose Mitchell, said she would take him in.

Steven added: “He didn’t really eat much so I think he was in shock. I can’t really keep him as Cassie is not cat-friendly, so I took him around to Rose’s as her cat has just had a litter of kittens herself. Rose has now said that she will look after and adopt the new arrival if his owner doesn’t come forward, and he is already settling in well with her cats – playing games and looking more healthy.

“She also took him to the vets to have him de-wormed as well.”

But it’s not the first time good samaritan Steven has stepped in to help an animal in need.

He added: “I like to play my part when I can – I have rescued a duck and some ducklings before, a blackbird, a fox and a tawny owl.

“I think it is important to help when you can, too often people will turn a blind eye to an injured or distressed animal and that is wrong.”
