A revamp of one of the town’s most cherished landmarks has signaled the end to a succeful campain.

The 108 Steps started life as a steep but functional stairway from Water’s Green to St Michael’s Church.

But over the years the famous flight of steps have become neglected with loose paving stones, weeds and litter.

It prompted a campaign led by a Lorna Riley, a 35-year-old mum of two from Rainow, which resulted in a revamp.

She launched an online petition calling for action and within days secured more than 300 signatories. She passed the petition to Cheshire East Council, which responded imediately.

A task force cleaned the steps, removing weeds and plants, the railing was repainted, and some of the steps were reset.

Reacting to the work Lorna said: “It is really inspiring to think that if you tell the authorities about a problem that they really listen and try and help.

“I remember counting the steps as a child and took my own there to do the same. When I saw the state of them and decided to take action.

“I am astounded at the difference a bit of posiitve action has taken. We can now all enjoy our beloved steps again.”A local legend attached to the 108 steps is that that anyone who can make it from bottom to top without taking a breath on the way will have a wish granted.
