I just read a letter in one of the national newspapers from a reader incredulous at hearing Cheshire East council is to spend £210k rehoming 18 great crested newts to facilitate the construction of the Crewe Green link road.

Someone’s having a laugh, right?

I love newts but, come on, that's £11,666 a piece. What’s wrong with a net and a jam-jar and removal to the nearest suitable pond?

Any scout troupe will do it for a decent donation.

Get a grip.

SUMMER is on the way and acquiring a dog for those country walks sounds like a great idea. Hold that thought.

Don’t rush off and buy a puppy or adopt a young dog if you don't have the time or the inclination for some serious training.

If you can’t attend a good training class for a six months forget it. You need a plan B.

Look at the picture above. That’s 10-year-old Easel currently in need of a home.

In my long experience older dogs are a much better match for owners with limited time and energy.

Dogs like Easel are happy to wander down to the pub or follow you around the garden. Their days of tearing around at 100mph are done.

Contrary to popular opinion you can ‘bond’ with an older dog just as you can with a pup.

I work with lots of older dogs and they are a joy. (It’s like a day off for me).
