Two runners have been crowned the winners of our race within a race at the Great Manchester Run.

Andrew Whittingham and Hayley Cavill were the fastest man and woman, from Wilmslow, at the race which attracted around 40,000 competitors.

We have compiled our own list of how our local runners performed in the event.

Andrew was the quickest of all the Wilmslow runners, breaking the six-minute mile mark and finishing in 35m 44s. The dad-of-three said: “I feel really good. I was the second fastest from Wilmslow last year so it’s good to win it this year.

“I like the Manchester run because it’s a fast and flat 10k so you can get a quick time. I was aiming for 3.30 per kilometre which I didn’t quite get, but that’s something to aim for next time.

“I broke my personal best since being over 40 which I was pleased with.” He added: “We set off at 10.20am which meant the roads were pretty quiet and it wasn’t too hot. It was the fun runners who I felt sorry for, but it was a great atmosphere.”

Andrew, who runs with Wilmslow Running Club, took up running three years ago when he turned 40.

Dad to 14-year-old Louisa , Fay, 11, and Kathryn, seven, he said: “We are a bit of a running family. We go and do the Bramhall 5k every week together.

“There is a real sense of achievement, running is quite a solitary sport but when you’re with a club or a group there’s more team work.

“It gives you a great sense of freedom and being in the outdoors.”

Hayley Cavill, who runs with Sale Harriers, also ran a very quick time and was the first Wilmslow woman to cross the finish line after 40m 20s.

And Wilmslow High School PE teacher Caroline Dunn led a team of six colleagues to raise £1,000 for the Seashell Trust, which educates and cares for severely disabled children and young people.

The head of Norcliffe house, who was aiming to complete the 10k city run in under 50 minutes, said: “Pupils have matched our £1,000 through event such as sponsored silences and cake bakes so we are hoping to give £2,000 to Seashell Trust this year.”
