The Romany Caravan will be moved to Bradford Industrial Museum despite objections from around the town.

Cheshire East Council has confirmed this afternoon that the caravan - a popular tourist attraction - will not return to Wilmslow.

It was once owned by the Reverend George Bramwell Evens who was famous for presenting BBC’s Children’s Hour and moved to Wilmslow four years before he died.

The caravan has been kept at the Romany memorial garden in Wilmslow,

It was taken by the UK Vardo Project to be repaired and painted - funded by the Romany Society - and since its repair there has been much debate about its future.

The council said it can no longer pay for its upkeep,

Campaigners say they have collected 1,000 signatures to keep it in Wilmslow and Romany Society members say they will help to pay for its maintenance.

But Cheshire East has now said it will be better protected at the Bradford museum.

A spokesman said they have the support of the Romany Society, despite members claiming there has never been a proper ballot.
