A student has died after falling down a ravine on a trip to Morocco.

Friends and family have paid tribute to Luke Sewell, 20, who was on a surfing holiday with friends when the tragedy happened.

Stepdad Jon Reyner, who is due to marry Luke’s mum later this year, said: “Luke was a caring boy who has always helped his mum with his autistic brother, Joel.

“Joel can’t understand what’s happened to his brother, it’s so sad for everyone.”

Luke lived on Ravenswood Road, Wilmslow, with mum Tracie Stringer and brother Joel, 19.

He was studying maths and statistics at Newcastle University and had gone to Agadir with uni friends.

He had left the group after realising he had left his phone at a nearby cafe – but never returned.

It is thought that he took a wrong turn down an unlit path and fell down a steep river bank, where he was found unconscious on the dried-out river bed the next morning.

Luke’s mum and dad, Steve Sewell, were at his bedside in hospital when he died the next day, on Wednesday, April 2.

Conor Winstanley, Luke’s friend, said on Facebook: “Luke was one of the most amazing people I’ve had the pleasure of being friends with.

“We all miss you and will keep you in our hearts, love you man.”

An inquest into Luke’s death has been opened and adjourned.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 22, with a procession through Wilmslow and service at Altrincham Crematorium at 3pm. It will feature a campervan hearse with surfboard on top, and a casket draped in a Manchester City flag.

Luke loved surfing and enjoyed the sport on holidays to Cornwall with his mum and brother.

He excelled at Wilmslow High School, winning a science bursary before leaving to study chemical engineering, switching to maths and statistics last year.

He also helped care for Joel.
