The process of appointing a new council leader is set to begin this week.

Nomination papers are expected to go out in a matter of days.

All 53 Conservative councillors can put themselves forward to be leader but require other councillors to propose and second them on the nomination form.

Councillors will meet on Thursday, January 14 to vote on who should become leader of the Conservative group.

At the next full council meeting on February 25, all 82 Cheshire East councillors will vote on who will be the next council leader.

Other parties can nominate their own candidates but as the majority group the Conservatives will have the major say.

Coun Jones said ballot papers will go out on December 21 and councillors will have 14 days to respond.

He said: “There is no way I will remain as leader of this council. I’ve cleared my office, I’m gone. I’ve no interest in staying. I want unity in my party.”
