ELDERLY tenants in a sheltered housing complex were left without central heating for SIX days.

Residents, some as old as 96, complained of freezing temperatures in their rooms, corridors and communal areas at Holmfield on Carlisle Street, Alderley Edge.

The problem affected most of the ground floor of the 32-flat complex since October 3.

Landlords Peaks and Plains Housing Trust said heating was finally restored yesterday (Thursday).

But residents slammed their landlord's handling of the situation and resorted to calling social services and charity Age UK Cheshire East for help.

Joe Kerford, 79, a retired musician, said: "It is not good enough that as the temperatures started to drop outside we were left without heating for six days.

"There was little in the way of communication from management until day five then they appeared with heaters for everyone affected and a letter from the head plumber or whatever apologising."

Mr Kerford said residents started to complain last Friday and were told by housing managers they were working on a solution.

He said: "There was a couple opposite suffering. He's 96 and she has just got out of hospital. As I stood talking to her she was shivering. It was unbearable.

"Some residents resorted to calling social services. I called Age UK to see if they could help."

A spokesman for Peaks and Plains, based in Macclesfield, apologised for the delay.
