I’m not qualified or clever enough to offer a detailed plan for the proposed development of Macclesfield town centre.

What I do know for certain is that we need to make the most of our town’s remarkable heritage.

Cheshire Building Society did magnificent work on its headquarters. If it’s now surplus to requirements then it’s the perfect building for a quality departmental store.

Market Square is crying out to be the town’s focal point.

With the attractive cobbled stones and impressive town hall it’s an obvious place to start.

We need a more uniform approach to store fronts and signage. Chestergate has been ruined by ad-hoc shop fits that inspire no one except (presumably) the owners.

Church Street is another unique location that could be developed to attract shoppers as it once did but we do need a consistent approach.

It’s no good pursuing a heritage theme in one location while building a glass and steel monstrosity in another.

Surrounded by fabulous countryside, Macclesfield could, and should, be a great tourist destination but we need a vision. Look what a fantastic transformation has been made of Vicky Park flats.

It’s brought colourful Victoria Park gardens back into play and made an asset of what was once a total eyesore. It can be done.

I’m sure there will be plenty more qualified than me to make suggestions but PLEASE can we have a uniform vision and not a mish-mash of piecemeal ideas.

Remember: A camel is a horse designed by a committee.
