Pancakes flew through the air in the town centre today in Macclesfield Hospital's annual charity pancake race.

The competition, in which teams take turns to sprint down Mill Street and back while flipping pancakes, was organised in aid of the MAST Appeal, to fund a second digital breast scanner at the hospital.

After six exciting heats, reigning champions The Flipping Tossers – the Leisure and Play Development team at Cheshire East Council - had battered the competition.

Carole Jones, who organised the event with MAST fundraiser Janet Ward, said: "It's been a fantastic day, the sun is shining and there has been great competitive spirit."

The 13th annual race raised £1,500.

Keith Rogers, one of the winning team, which was sponsored by ISG Construction, said: "I think this is great for the charity and it's great for us to get out there into the community.

"We promote healthy lifestyles, so it's great to be able to practise what we preach."

The Vibrations, from Vibe Ltd, were second closely followed by the Talking Crepe from Silk FM.

But it didn't end with the races as the Pantosstic 4 – nurses from the outpatients department at Macclesfield Hospital - were recognised for their fancy-dress efforts after turning up as superheroes and presented with a special prize by the Mayor of Macclesfield, Coun David Neislon.

Other teams taking part were The Four Tossers from ISS Catering at Macclesfield Hospital, The Silkmen Substitutes, from Macclesfield Town Football Club, Flipping Lawyers from Knights Solicitors LLP, PhenomenKnights, from Phenomenex Ltd, ISG Flippin Good Builders from ISG construction and a team from SAS Daniels Solicitors.
