Hundreds of spectators and 12 teams of flippers turned out for the biggest and best pancake race the town has seen in years.

Forty-eight competitors from businesses, clubs and organisations across Macclesfield grabbed their pans and pancakes and raced up and down Mill Street for the Macclesfield Pancake Race.

Hundreds of pounds were raised for ECHO, the charity of East Cheshire NHS Trust, providing equipment, treatment and staff development for Macclesfield District General Hospital and other community healthcare services.

Seizing victory at the Shrove Tuesday event were Santander Macclesfield, with Tesco bagging second place and the Morphman team, led by the landlord of the Old Millstone John Gartland, snatching third position.

Morphman also took the fancy dress crown with their portrayals of Morph, the TV plasticine creation of the late Tony Hart.

Silk FM provided music while the Mayor of Macclesfield Coun Liz Durham presented the race prizes.

Fiona Doorey, ECHO’s fundraising manager, said: “This is the third year we’ve run the event and the best yet."
