Unsung heroes from the town have been honoured at the first Mayor of Macclesfield Community Awards.

The event recognised and celebrated people who volunteer their time and energy to help others.

Among the seven winners were four hard-working volunteers from Hurdsfield: Richard Cooke, secretary of the Hurdsfield Community Group and a major contributor to the success of the Hurdsfield Community Library; Andrew Melville, chairman of the Hurdsfield Community Group who campaigned for improvements to the community centre; and Adele Woods and Samantha Lea, who established Friends of Banbury Park to improve the public open space wrecked by vandalism and litter.

Other winners were: Jane Munro for her community work including The Thread, Barnaby Festival, the Treacle Market and community action group Make It Macc; Lynne Jones for her role in the Barnaby Festival; and Jerry Bates for his daily litter picks in the Upton community.

Janet Jackson, mayor of Macclesfield, said: “It was a thrill to present these awards to such a wonderful group of deserving individuals.”
