Two more wards at Macclesfield Hospital have been closed as bosses battle to contain the spread of a virus.

The Langley Unit, formerly Ward 10, was closed last week to try and limit the spread of the Diarrhoea and Sickness (D&S) virus. That ward has today been re-opened but Wards 4 and 6, the Respiratory and Orthopaedic wards, have been shut by the East Cheshire NHS Trust.

Strict visiting restrictions are also in place with relatives asked to contact the hospital before attending.

Anyone with symptoms are being warned not to attend the hospital A+E department, but make use of other local services such as their GP, pharmacy or NHS Direct.

Kath Senior, Director of Nursing, Quality and Performance said: "The hospital has had to take the preventative action of closing Wards 4 and 6 at Macclesfield District General Hospital due to an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting.

"The virus spreads really quickly and we have taken all necessary precautions to ensure we contain the spread to other areas of the hospital for the protection of patients and staff.

"Please be vigilant if you are attending the hospital for any reason at all.

"The Langley Unit has now re-opened and we need to ensure we minimise the risk of further spread.

"We will re-open the wards as soon as it is safe to do so."
