Tributes have been paid to a borough councillor who has died suddenly at the age of 60.

Phil Hoyland, who represented Poynton West and Adlington on Cheshire East Council for four years, passed away suddenly on Wednesday (March 11).

Mr Hoyland was a leading member of Macclesfield’s Conservative Party.

A spokesman for the family said: "Jane and the family are stunned and shocked by the sudden loss of Phil but are grateful for the many, many kind gestures, wishes and offers of support they have received. They have no words to express how much they appreciate the overwhelming response that has been shown by colleagues and friends far and wide.

"It is undoubtedly a testament to Phil who was a gentleman, a true friend and a much loved family man."

Also paying tribute, Macclesfield MP David Rutley described Mr Hoyland’s death as a huge loss.

He said: “Phil was passionate about serving the people of Poynton and Macclesfield. He was a completely committed, hard working and dedicated public servant. Whether it was campaigning for the Poynton Relief Road, initiating the Poynton Neighbourhood Plan or taking a lead on election campaigns, Phil gave 120 per cent to everything he did.

“Phil’s glass was always half-full and his cheery disposition helped raise spirits and brought a sense of fun to even the most challenging situation. More than anything, Phil was a warm human being who many were pleased to be able to call their friend.

“To say that Phil will be greatly missed massively understates the gap that he will leave in the lives of those who knew him. My thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences go to his wife, Jane, and his family at this sad time.”

Mr Hoyland, of Charlecote Road, Poynton, was elected to the borough council and Poynton Town Council in 2011.

He served as chairman of the Children and Families Policy Development Group in 2012-13 and chaired Children and Families and Adult Safeguarding Scrutiny Committee during 2013-14. He was also the council’s Walking & Cycling Champion.

He was heavily involved in the big issues affecting Poynton including the development of the former BAE Woodford Aerodrome and the forthcoming Poynton Relief Road.

But he also got stuck into hyper-local issues such as creating Neighbourhood Plans, bus route improvements and leading a campaign to retain free parking in Poynton.

Council leader Michael Jones broke the news to councillors over email.

He said: “It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Councillor Philip Hoyland.

“I am sure that you will join me in sending the council’s condolences to his family at this difficult time.”

Outside of politics he enjoyed the outdoors, especially cycling.

He was an officer in the Army before starting a career in financial services and later starting his own advertising and marketing business.

Mr Hoyland leaves behind his wife Jane, two daughters and a stepson.
