SECTIONS of the main route through Bollington will be closed for the next six weeks as work begins on two major road resurfacing schemes costing £300,000.

A 2,100ft stretch of Bollington Road will be completed first, followed by a 1,800ft section of Shrigley Road.

The Cheshire County Council schemes are funded by the South East Manchester Multi Modal Strategy and about 350 letters detailing the plans have already been sent to relevant homes and businesses.

The work will start on Monday, March 7, and Bollington and Disley county councillor, Elspeth Wallace, said that steps had been taken to keep disruption to a minimum.

"This scheme is a major investment on two sections of two busy roads," she said.

"Work was carried out on Bollington roads two years ago and this scheme can be seen as the final part of major reconstruction to tackle problems caused by heavy traffic and the weather.

"We would like to apologise in advance for the disruption caused during road closures, however everything is being done to minimise this as much as possible.

"Not only will contractors be working seven days a week, but the crossing patrol outside Bollington Cross School will be unaffected because work there has been specifically scheduled to take place during the Easter holidays."

Coun Wallace insisted that care would be taken to retain stone footway paving and setts, in keeping with the town's heritage.

She added: "Any loose or damaged areas will be re-laid or replaced with new materials closely matching as much as possible those already in place.

"During a road closure, there will also be on-site marshals each end to advise and monitor local traffic."

Morrison Highway Maintenance Ltd will be carrying out resurfacing and reconstruction of the road sections, as well as renewing drainage gullies, replacing kerbing and resurfacing and relaying areas of footpaths.

Bollington Road, from Clarke Lane to Flash Lane, will be closed to through traffic until Easter, but householders will still have access to their properties.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on Shrigley Road from the start of the contract, with a closure between Ingersley Road and Spuley Lane from March 21 until April. Diversions will be signposted.
