I'M a Celebrity star Phil Tufnell couldn't wait to get out of Alderley Edge during his 500-mile charity trek through the UK.

The former England cricketer, who won the nation's hearts during a stint in the Australian jungle, got lacklustre support during his walk through the village.

He was expecting rich pickings for Macmillan Cancer Relief but was far from bowled over by the donations he received.

Phil, writing on his internet diary on day 24 of his 28-day charity challenge, said: "The route took us through Posh and Becks' territory, and that excited a few of the crew."

"Mind you, for such a rich area we didn't do so well on the collecting. It's funny, the poorer the people, the more they seem to give you."

"We saw a lot of Porsches and Mercedes yesterday in Alderley Edge but not many of them stopped to hand anything over. I suppose that's how you get a Porsche or Mercedes."

"Beat up Fiestas, old Vauxhalls and smoky Peugeots, their drivers are always pulling over and chucking quids at us."

Phil was joined by Chris Bisson, the former Coronation Street actor, on his Alderley Edge stage of the walk, which took him from Manchester's Old Trafford cricket ground to Macclesfield's own cricket venue.

From there, the Macmillan npower 500 walk wound its way to Nottingham's Trent Bridge cricket ground, where Phil took a deserved rest to watch England beat New Zealand.

During the 28 day challenge, Phil helped to raise £350,000 for the Macmillan cancer charity, which recently opened a specialist ward at Macclesfield District General Hospital.

And a spokesman for Macmillan said some of the money raised by Phil could be going to help fund the new ward.

"A percentage of the money raised will go to the local projects Phil visited on his journeys, so our new centre in Macclesfield could benefit."
