Potential students of the council’s proposed academy have one week to make their views on the decision known.

Cheshire East Council suggested Macclesfield High School should be replaced with an academy, under the supervision of Macclesfield College, in order to tackle the problem of surplus places at the Manchester Road High School.

The consultation into the option is now in its final week and parents, pupils, carers and residents who will be affected by the decision are urged to have their say on the proposal before it’s too late.

Coun Hilda Gaddum, cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, said: "The consultation is part of the council’s commitment to giving residents more choice and control about services and resources.

"We are very encouraged by the level of feedback we have received so far.

"For anyone who has not yet had their say, now is the time to make their views known."

Coun Marc Asquith, ward member for Macclesfield Forest, added: "It is crucial that we collect the views of as many people as possible, as all feedback will be taken into account when a decision is taken about how to proceed.

"This will ensure that the decision reflects the wishes of parents, carers, pupils and the wider community of Macclesfield."

The proposal would involve the closure of Macclesfield High and the subsequent creation of an academy for pupils aged between 11 and 16, which would open in September 2011.

The consultation closes on January 14, and a full cabinet meeting will follow on February 14, when the council will make its final decision whether to formally approve the closure of Macclesfield High to make way for an academy.
