Revellers have more reason to celebrate as the popular party in the park will be back this summer.

With the town still basking in the glory of the hugely successful Barnaby Festival, we can reveal the party will be back on August 14.

It was feared last year’s event was going to be the last when Cheshire East Council withdrew funding in January.

But West Park’s traditional all-day concert will be back with an entertaining line-up of tribute acts to ABBA, Lady Gaga and the so-called Rat Pack, which featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr among others.

And the Macclesfield Express will be having its own stage to showcase the town’s best bands and celebrate grass roots music.

This summer’s extravaganza, renamed ‘Concert in the Park’, is aiming to build on the success of party in the park, which has attracted tens of thousands of revellers over the years with some big name headline acts like Lulu and Lemar.

It will now go ahead without sponsors – relying largely on the pre-sale of tickets. Local DJ Andy Bailey, who is its chief architect, said: "It’s really important to me for this event to continue, it’s been so important to the Macclesfield community.

"We have seen a lot of events go, and once they do they never come back. This year, I want to make it more community-based, that’s why we have two stages rather than one so we champion local up and coming bands."

Bill North, who ran the ‘Party in the Park’ until last year, said: "I am absolutely thrilled to bits – I wish them all the luck in the world."

Headline tribute acts spanning 50 years of popular music will illuminate one stage, with a second ‘Live and Local’ stage offering local musicians their moment in the limelight.

Ten local acts will perform during the evening after being selected through auditions. This stage is sponsored by the Express and acts will be introduced by our very own musical maestro Garry the Hat.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, CEC cabinet member for health and well-being, said: "The funding did end but we have said ‘here you are, use the park’. We will offer any help we can."
