AMBITIOUS plans to create a climbing and bouldering centre in the town centre have been given the green light.

Time To Care (UK) CIC, a community interest company, are aiming to transform the former Everett Charles Technologies premises on Goodall Street.

The plans will see the creation of 11 different individual climbing sections including climbing walls rising to a maximum height of 7.5 metres.

There will also be a multi-sports area for roller skating, 5-a side football, indoor cricket, basket ball, netball and roller hockey, and a soft play centre for younger children, a community room and a cafe.

The £450,000 proposals were unanimously approved by Cheshire East Council’s strategic planning committee last Wednesday.

The team behind Time to Care include builder Andrew Brooks and his teaching assistant wife Rachael, accountant Karen Montgomery, architect Ian Malyan and retired police sergeant Mick Warren.

Celebrating the scheme's approval Mr Brooks, 43, said: "We are very pleased and can now start moving forward.

“Obviously Macclesfield has good access to outdoor climbing sites in the nearby peak district which is seen as one of the premier climbing and bouldering locations in Britain. But the nearest indoor climbing facility can be found in either Marple or Buxton which are 13 and 12 miles away, which prohibits easy access for most to a fun and exhilarating sporting experience.

“We want somewhere for the all the community. I have four kids and there is very little for them in the town. This gives children of all ages a place to come and exercise and have a good time. There’s a cafe so parents can come and relax while the kids play.”

The venture also aims to create jobs and opportunies for people currently not in employment, education or training as well as tackle obesity in children, and provide a town centre sport venue.
