DESERVING figures in the Macclesfield community have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The list, compiled for the Queen's 80th birthday, includes a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) to David Kyle for his services to the Criminal Justice System and OBE (Order of the British Empire) to Anthony Hammersley area director for HM Revenue and Customs.

Alan Lawton was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) for his services to brass band music.

The 70-year-old began playing the cornet and trumpet at the age of ten and has conducted Poynton's Vernon Building Society band for the past eight years - having joined as a player more than three decades ago.

He came to Stockport 36 years ago to work at Fairies Aviation.

Alan has led the band to numerous competition successes although plays rarely himself now because of sight problems.

"We've won a lot of prizes but the best thing for me is teaching the young players - some of whom have gone on to be the among the best in the country," said the former cost accountant.

He added: "I am absolutely delighted with the MBE. It's a real honour and comes to me completely out of the blue."

Alan lives with his wife Margaret in neighbouring Stockport and has two sons and three granddaughters.
