A teenager smashed a bottle over her boyfriend’s head during a row, a court heard.

Sadie Elizabeth Dower, 19, caused a cut to his head which he had to have glued at hospital, prosecutors said.

Police were called to the former couple’s flat in the town centre where they found Dower crying ‘uncontrollably’ and with ‘blood all over her’, magistrates were told.

But the court was told that the defendant had been the victim of a controlling and abusive relationship that ‘got out of hand’, the court heard. At Stockport magistrates’ court Dower, of Chestergate, Macclesfield, admitted assault by beating.

Katie Smith, prosecuting, said the assault took place on June 24. She said: “The victim and defendant were in a relationship at the time.

“Police are called to a flat by a Mr Drop who works in a charity shop nearby. The family of the victim came into the shop and asked him for help after the assault.

“Police attended the flat and could hear a female crying loudly behind the door. They found the defendant with blood all over her. She had cuts on her arms. She said ‘I have hurt [him] and I am sorry’. She was described as crying uncontrollably. Officers found a lot of broken glass on the floor. The victim was reluctant to speak to police but did say he had been hit twice over the head with a glass bottle and suffer a cut to his head. He went to hospital had had it glued.

John Gallagher, defending, said Dower, who has no previous convictions, was ‘an impressionable young person’. She is both naive and vulnerable. The relationship was inappropriate and against the advice of friends and family.

“She was the victim of a controlling and abusive relationship that got out of hand. Using a bottle is potentially very dangerous.

“She is very ashamed of her actions. There was some alcohol and drugs use taken under the influence of [her boyfriend].

“She has now cut down her drink and is off the drugs altogether.”

The probation service recommended a conditional discharged calling the circumstances ‘exceptional’. However magistrates felt the use of the weapon was ‘serious’ and ordered a nine month community order with a six week curfew and eight day rehabiltation requirement.

The couple have separated.
