A student has been arrested after a teacher was attacked in a classroom at Macclesfield College.

The woman was taken to hospital following the assault. Police were called to the college and have launched an investigation.

A student was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released on bail until November 23.

A college spokesman said the incident was ‘a serious matter’ but would not comment further while the police investigation is underway.

Nishma Zafar, director of customer services and HR at the Park Lane college, said: "This was an isolated incident and the police are investigating.

"Macclesfield College takes the safeguarding of its staff and students very seriously and we are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone on campus. In this particular instance, appropriate action was taken immediately to protect the welfare of those involved.

"The member of staff at the centre of the incident was taken to hospital as a precaution and is currently resting.

"We would like to emphasise that while this is a very serious matter, it was not a sustained attack and incidences of this nature are unheard of at the college.

"The overall behaviour of our student population is very good and we have a professional team of staff who are dedicated to providing students with the very best learning opportunities."

A police spokesman said: "At 10.30am on Wednesday, October 6, police attended Macclesfield College following an allegation of assault by a male pupil on a female teacher.

"The pupil was arrested on suspicion of a section 39 assault, interviewed and released on police bail until November 23 pending further police inquiries."
