A former deputy headteacher died three days after being awarded an OBE for his outstanding contribution to education.

Kevin Hollins was deputy head of Poynton High School during his long career.

He was awarded the OBE in June honour’s list for his services to education.

Kevin, from Congleton, recently became ill and was admitted to East Cheshire Hospice, meaning he could not collect his award at Buckingham Palace.

When hospice staff heard of the situation they sprung into action and organised a special ceremony and afternoon tea in the patients’ lounge.

Kevin’s wife Val and children, as well as other friends and family, were there to see Kevin get his OBE from David Briggs, Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, on November 28.

Mr Briggs praised Kevin as an ’excellent teacher’ for ‘bridging the gap between education and employment’.

Sadly, Kevin died on December 1.

Emma Dixon, matron at the hospice, said: “We were absolutely delighted to be able to host this event. It was a lovely way to celebrate his amazing achievement. The hospice was honoured to be part of it.”
