The Chancellor George Osborne says the outcry over the Wilmslow town vision is a "victory for for local people."

The Tatton MP was speaking after he visited the exhibition at Wilmslow Leisure Centre, detailing the plan.

He looked at the drawings and had discussions with new Council Leader Michael Jones.

Speaking to the Express after the meeting he said: "Mistakes have been made in the presentation of the plan.

"The plans has been presented as a fait accompli and it's not that.

"It is going to change and change significantly.

"But the good news is people have had the chance to have their say.

"I think its a victory for local people in that sense."

And he said he opposed development in many of the areas outlined for new housing.

"I don't think all the sites identified for housing are the right.

"I am not anti-new housing.

"I am anti new-housing in the wrong area.

"I think there are better and more appropriate sites available."

However he swung his support behind improvement of the town centre.

He said: "We need to get the balance right

"No towns can be frozen

"I very much support the improvement of the town centre.

"I think leisure facilities could be improved.

"I think the theatre could be improved.

"But we need to do it in a way that is sensitive to local people.

"I have been in close touch with Cheshire East and the town council and will be working with them going forward."
