Sporting events have raised thousands of pounds in support of families affected by the Bosley mill disaster.

Charity bike rides, pool competitions, netball and football matches and golf tournaments have all boosted the fund which helps those affected by the explosion at Bosley Wood Treatment in July.

A golf day at Tytherington Club also added to the fund, organised by former mill receptionist Moira Loake and her husband Steve, who runs Direct Food Ingredients in Macclesfield.

More than 30 pool players from Macclesfield raised £1,420 for the appeal as two teams The Roundheads and The Cavaliers played each other in a tournament organised by Macclesfield Pool League.

Local businesses have also been chipping in. A collection at B&Q Macclesfield raised £115 for the fund and the Macclesfield branch of Yorkshire Bank donated £140.

Katie Harrison, customer services officer at Yorkshire Bank in Macclesfield organised the appeal. She said: “The disaster at the mill in Bosley affected everyone in the community. We decided we wanted to raise funds to the Bosley Disaster Appeal Fund, with generous donations from our customers.”

Meanwhile, kindhearted residents in Congleton have been helping the Bosley fund.

All proceeds raised from last weekend’s 32nd Congleton Half Marathon, organised by Congleton Harriers, and staff versus sixth form students netball and football matches at Eaton Bank Academy have been donated.

The Cheshire Freemasons, the county chapter of the masons organisation, raised £10,000 toward the appeal.

Fundraising events continue with a concert by Biddulph Male Voice Choir at St Mary’s Church in Bosley this Saturday, October 10 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 from Macclesfield Tourist Information Centre or you can call 01260 226389.
