The Artisan Market will be trialled on a Sunday after some businesses claimed the market is damaging their Saturday trade.

The decision to move the market from Saturdays was taken during talks between market bosses, Cheshire East Council and Wilmslow Town Council.

Issues discussed included impact on sales, increased footfall and disruption on Grove Street.

Cheshire East councillor Rod Menlove said: “The Artisan Market was welcomed as an event that would attract more shoppers to the benefit of Wilmslow retailers.

“It has established itself as innovative and successful, adding vibrancy to Wilmslow with greatly increased numbers of shoppers.

“However, the market has evolved over the past two years and there are now mixed messages on the impact.”

Coun Keith Purdom, chairman of Wilmslow Town Council, said: “The town council sees that it has a key role to play in the success of retailing and business.

“We are grateful to everyone who has taken part in the lively debate around the Artisan Market.”

MP George Osborne added: “The market is a fantastic attraction for Wilmslow but I understand the concerns shared by the established retail shops.

“It is great news that it is has been agreed to move the market to Sunday and I congratulate everyone in bringing this about.

“I hope that people will continue to support it and their shops at the weekends.”

The monthly market will switch to Sundays for November and December. October’s market will go ahead as planned on Saturday 19.

But some business owners and market traders are against the move.

Angela Kapoor, who runs the Cheshire Tarts Patisserie stall, said:   “We don’t think it’s the right decision for Wilmslow.

“We rely on trade at the market as a key source of income. We are a very vulnerable business and more could have been done to protect our interests and those of fellow traders.”

Denise Valente, who runs the event with Vicky Jackson, said: “It’s unfortunate that some market traders, many from Wilmslow, who would normally join us on a Saturday will be unable to do so when we move to Sunday.

“We hope our Christmas Artisan Market has the same allure as last year, despite only being a single day market rather than the two-day extravaganza we had planned.

“The market was created to address the decline in our town centre and we’re disappointed our ambitions have not been achieved for some retailers.

“Despite this we feel we have made our town a destination for many thousands of visitors on market day, providing a shop window for what Wilmslow has to offer.”
