HUNDREDS of pupils in Macclesfield are due to have lessons disrupted tomorrow due to a public sector strike.

Out of the 40 primary and secondary schools in the town eight will be fully partially closed.

These include: Hollinhey Primary School; Poynton High School; Rainow Primary School; St Alban's Catholic Primary School; St John the Evangelist CofE Primary School; The Marlborough Primary School and Upton Priory School.

The one-day action by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) will cause headaches for mums and dads across the town forced to cancel work or scramble to find childcare.

Public sector unions Unison, GMB and Unite will also stage a walkout which will hit the town hall, libraries and courts.

The dispute centres on pay and conditions.

While some teachers from Tytherington High School will be striking, headteacher Steve Jowett is keeping the school open to all classes.

In a leter to parents Mr Jowett said: "We have Year 10 on work experience and Years 11 and 13 out on exam leave so we are confident that we can open as normal for everyone else.

"I regret this disruption to the school day but I understand the union position and know many members of staff feel passionate about the issues involved."

Christine Blower, general secretary of the NUT, said: “The Government is still failing to make progress on our trade dispute over teachers’ pay, pensions and workload. The talks are still only about the implementation of Government policies, not about the fundamental issues we believe to be detrimental to education and the profession.

“Strike action is a last resort for teachers and we deeply regret the disruption it causes parents and pupils. This date has been chosen to cause minimum disruption to examinations."
