Patients are urged to stay away from A&E unless its an emergency after thousands of unnecessary visits last winter.

It has been revealed that more than 3,300 people who visited A&E at Macclesfield Hospital between November 2014 and February 2015 needed no treatment apart from information and advice. Many had common ailments like coughs and colds.

Health bosses are urging people to think carefully before going to A&E.

Macclesfield MP David Rutley has joined the campaign.

He said: “It is vital people going to A&E should be those who really need its services.”
