Corrie star Simon Gregson and football legend Mike Summerbee are backing a campaign to stop motorists driving at racetrack speeds along a 30mph road.

The Coronation Street actor and the ex-Manchester City star have thrown their weight behind a residents’ battle to slow drivers on Morley Green Road, Wilmslow.

A recent smash, in which a Land Rover Discovery ploughed into two parked cars, was the last straw for locals.

Simon, 36, who plays taxi driver Steve McDonald lives in the area and admits he has been convicted of speeding in the past. But he says since he became a father, he respects speed limits and urges others to do the same.

Residents have contacted Cheshire East Council and the police, who are installing a speed monitoring device.

Simon, who was was married last month and has two children, said: "I know I’ve been done for speeding, but driving at 70mph in a residential street with children around is different.

"As soon as you have kids it hits home. When you are young, you drive like an idiot, but then you grow up. Now I have a speed limiter – sometimes there is a trail of people behind me. The speeds on Morley Green Road are beyond ridiculous – people are doing up to 70mph day and night.

Grandfather-of-five Mike Summerbee, who lives nearby said: "There are families who live down there. We need to make it a safe road for our children."

PCSO Chris Hopkins is collecting speed data. He said if advice and enforcement didn’t help, police would liaise with the council about road layout.

Coun Rod Menlove said: "We will raise concerns at the next liaison meeting. We may be able to use temporary electronic signs which display speeds. Traffic-calming measures may be appropriate, but only if accepted by residents."
