Coronation Street star Samia Smith dropped in  for a brew as volunteers raised an estimated £10,000 for Macmillan cancer care at a series of coffee mornings across Wilmslow.

Fifty events were held around the town as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Corrie star Samia attended the coffee morning at Meller Braggins estate agent on Alderley Road, which raised more than £800.  Coffee and biscuits were
served to customers and businesses.

Children, parents and staff at Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery in Hawthorn Lane teamed up with the new mums group for coffee and cake to raise £43.

Rise coffee shop in Water Lane teamed up with Barclays Bank to raise £352, to be doubled by Barclays.  The Boardroom donated cakes. The bank’s Alderley Edge branch raised £100.

Paul Eaton, who owns Rise, gave out leaflets and for every customer who shows one of them in the coffee shop over the next two weeks, he will donate £1 to Macmillan. Barclays will match every £1 donated.

Marks and Spencer at Handforth Dean hosted an event including a charity zumba class with instructors from Elite Fizzique.

And Jacqueline and Grahame Woodhouse at the Drum and Monkey in Alderley Edge served coffee and cakes and held a raffle, raising £100.

Sarah Page, Macmillan's fundraising manager in Wilmslow, said:  “It was a fantastic success and I thank everyone who took part.

“We rely almost entirely on donations and without all the hard work we wouldn’t be able to keep offering the services so many rely on.”

All the money raised will be used to fund Macmillan’s cancer services including specialist nurses, a nurse-run support line and financial advice and support for cancer patients.
