Young karters from a club set up at a Macclesfield school 37 years ago brought back an armful of awards from a national championships.

All Hallows Kart Club has members from schools around the town who practise at Hooton Park, Ellesmere Port and compete in the National Association of School Karting league.

Its nine racers and an entourage of parent helpers took part in the three-day Schools National Karting competition against 12 schools involving 130-plus drivers.

Patrick Jennings, 13, was named national champion after winning in his class 11 Honda and Marcus Edmunds, 18, narrowly missed a win in the high-powered Class 7 TKM.

Recently-retired team leader Steve Grundy was awarded the Graham Keyte trophy in recognition of his contribution to school and karting.

This has been a bumper year for the club which is now led by Stuart Newton.

Emma Jennings, Patrick’s mum who helps at the club and whose other son, Michael, 15, also competed, said: "It really was a good year for us, we haven’t won anything for years but this year we nearly had two firsts.

"There is great team spirit and a lot of support from parents."

Her third son, James, 16, will soon join the club.

Emma says she and her husband Jim approve of the boys’ hobby.

Mrs Jennings, of Rotherhead Drive, said: "Karting has been fantastic for the boys.

"It helps them focus, and they learn all about the mechanics and being part of a team."
