The son of one of Macclesfield Town’s greatest figures is about to embark on a charity cycle in his late dad’s name.

Frank Beaumont was player-manager of the Silkmen when they beat Telford Utd 2-0 in the first ever FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium in 1970.

To commemorate his dad’s inspirational victory, his son Martin is planning to ride and walk on a 450 mile journey to each stadium in the order the club visited them en route to the final.

Frank, who also played for Barnsley, Bury and Stockport County, died three years ago after a long battle with cancer.

Martin said: “All our family still miss him dearly and he is never far from all our thoughts, I personally lost my best friend, role model and inspiration when he died.

“We have decided to raise money for Barnsley Hospice, the place dad spent his last days, as well as for Weston Park Cancer Hospital, and we’re going to make a donation to Cancer Research UK so hopefully one day we can find a cure for this horrendous disease.

“With it being 45 years our plan is to do 450 miles, mostly on a bike but also to run as well.

“Dad along with Macclesfield Town mean a lot me and this is one final swan-song from me to celebrate the life of a wonderful man and recognise the superb achievements of the team he managed.”

The journey will take Martin to Burscough in Lancashire, Gainsborough Trinity, Bangor City in Wales, Burton Albion, Stoke City, then to Brighton and on to Fulham’s Craven Cottage.

Building surveyor Martin, who is also 45-years-old, added: “From Fulham I will complete the FA Trophy trail by finishing my challenge at Wembley Stadium.

“My brother-in-law Steve Bland is planning to cycle most of the route with me and his support and assistance will be a vital part if I am to complete the challenge, my other brother-in-law Dean and sister-in-law Tracey will also join me in a 24 mile run as they are both training for the Manchester marathon, so I am really lucky to have their support.”
