THE history of silk in Macclesfield is to be featured on a popular TV antiques show.

Dealer Bill Livesley will be telling viewers about silk pictures.

The BBC's "Flog It!" combines the traditional aspect of the Antiques Roadshow with the knockabout excitement of Bargain Hunt.

Valuation days are held around the country and then viewers have the chance to auction valuable or interesting items.

According to Bill, who runs Gatehouse Antiques in Chester Road, the show was filming in Buxton when someone brought in a silk handkerchief made for the Queen's Coronation.

"The producer thought that it was interesting so why not go to Macclesfield and see how the handkerchief was made," said Bill.

The show completed some filming at Paradise Mill and the presenter Paul Martin tried out one of the jacquard looms, which would have been used to make the handkerchief.

Louanne Collins, Macclesfield Silk Museums director, said: "There's going to be a feature on the actual programme.

"Somebody brought in a silk handkerchief and they decided to come in and do a bit of investigation.

"They did some filming in the mill and with our weavers in residence and they talked to one of our guides about the history of silk."

The show's producers then decided to find out some more and contacted Bill, who has been interested in antiques since the age of 13.

He said: "I'm only on the programme for two minutes but it doesn't do any harm to tell people about Macclesfield."

Bill formed Gatehouse Antiques 27 years ago and has recently moved premises down the road from an 18th century building to a 17th century one.

The Flog It! programme featuring Macclesfield will be shown sometime in April next year.
