An exhibition celebrating Afghan culture and heritage is taking place this week hosted by the Silk Museum.

The Afghan Bazaar will include a talk on Islamic textiles by author and textile expert John Gillow.

Spokesman Jane Munro said:  "He is a prolific author and pops up on TV so we are very lucky to have him in Macclesfield.

"The exhibition will be complimented by demonstrations by local contemporary makers in the arts of jewellery making, embroidery, weaving and felting.

"It will be an opportunity to reflect on the contrast between this and Macclesfield’s own silk heritage and buy exceptional old rugs, textiles, glass, ceramics and jewellery.

"We are trying to bring this exhibition alive. It will appeal to textile fanatics but also people who just love beautiful things.”

John Gillow's talk will take place on Thursday (June 23) at 7.30pm, in the Whitaker Room at the Heritage Centre for £5 incuding a glass of wine, tickets from 01625 613210.

On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 there will be free craft demonstrations from 2pm to 4pm and on Thursday, June 30, in the Charles Roe Room historian Dorothy Bentley-Smith will give a talk on The lure of Central Asia.
