SHOPPERS piled into the town’s Woolworths store and stripped shelves bare during the opening days of the company’s closing down sale.

With discounts of up to 50 per cent on all goods, the Mill Street-based shop – one of 815 outlets across the country – witnessed an assault on its aisles and checkouts as people of Macclesfield sniffed around for a last chance knock-down purchase.

Keith Alexander, the Macclesfield Town FC manager, was one of many who found time to battle the bustling queues.

Speaking to the Express on day one of the sale, he said: "I’ve just come down to do some shopping for the young daughter.

"My family has always used Woolworths, I used to get my pick and mix from here.

"It would be sad to see it go, but it is good to pick up a few bargains before Christmas. I just hope that someone might still buy it."

With the future of the company still uncertain, the 26 staff employed at Macclesfield Woolworths are currently biding their time amid possible redundancy, and the store’s biggest ever sale.

Some offers in the shop included 10pc off DVDs and computer games, 20pc off mobile phones, 30pc off children’s clothing and 50pc off greetings cards.

But cut down prices were greeted with a mixed reaction by those who flocked to Macclesfield Woolworths on both Thursday (December 11) and Friday (December 12).

Elaine Houghton, who lives on the Weston, said: "It is not as cheap as it is made out to be, which is a bit dissapointing.

"I bought nothing too exciting, just a pen and backpacks as stocking fillers for my two children."

Janine Jameson, from Sutton, said she will be very sad if the store closes.

"The sale is ok, but not everything is half price. I’ve bought a few things for my children before the Christmas rush starts so it has been really useful for that."

A spokesman from Deloitte, Woolworths administrator, said: "Christmas is clearly the busiest time of the year for retailers and it is prudent to do all we can to sell existing stock. Additional goods have been moved to all stores and further stock will be added in the coming days."

A staff member at Woolworths on Mill Street, said: "At the moment we know the store will be open until Christmas. We are not sure what will happen after that."

Until further notice, Woolworths on Mill Street will continue with the sale.
