A fed-up shopper has launched a petition to bring Primark shop to the town centre.

Holly Chaffe, 26, said she has is sick of Macclesfield becoming a ‘ghost town’ and not being able to buy cheap clothes nearby.

Holly, who grew up in Macclesfield and lives in the town centre, has launched an online petition calling on budget fashion shop Primark to open a store in the town centre. And interest is growing with more than 250 signatures already on the petition.

Holly, who is hoping for a thousand signatures, says she is spreading the word about her petition and will keep up her campaign to put pressure on Primark to come to Macclesfield.

The former Fallibroome Academy pupil said: “I was sick of walking through the town centre and so many shops closing down.

“It’s becoming a ghost town. I can’t afford to pay a lot for clothes but in Primark you can get a whole wardrobe for not much money. Everyone needs cheap useful clothing. The shops are too expensive and I can’t travel to Stockport or Manchester. All ages would benefit from a Primark and it would create jobs. The shop would attract people from different areas and may just make this ghost town become popular again. Not everyone will agree and like all shops you have to be careful what you pick but I’m going to tell as many people as I can about my petition.”

Holly says Primark would need a large unit to include items for men, women and children and thinks the Grosvenor Centre would be a good spot.

The centre currently plans to extend into the former Cheshire Building Society which will feature three large retail units.

The petition could face opposition among those in the town who are fighting for more independent businesses.

Primark has taken the world of cheap fashion by storm and continues to open new branches. It’s been associated with a culture for throwaway fashion.

A Primark spokesman said: “We are delighted by the support shown towards the company. We do not comment on future plans, but the UK market is very important to us. We remain determined to offer the best value on the high street.”
