TRADERS in Wilmslow who claim water mains roadworks are driving customers away are chasing compensation from United Utilities.

The shopkeepers on Alderley Road say trade has suffered since workers moved to St Anns Parade last week to continue work started in June to lay new pipe from Wilmslow to Alderley Edge.

The business owners say the associated road closure and diversion are putting people off the town centre altogether.

Andrew O’Grady, owner of menswear shop Leonards, is making a claim against the water company, citing a promise made to businesses at a consultation meeting at Wilmslow High School to compensate for loss of trade.

Andrew said: "They can't just dig up the town centre in the middle of a recession and not pay a forfeit.

"It’s ridiculous, I know they have to work but not at the expense of local businesses.

"The diversions are taking people away from Wilmslow town centre."

Traders along St Anns Parade echoed Mr O’ Grady’s concerns.

Craig Malpus, of the Gentry Grooming Co, said: "It’s been really quiet since they started work here, but we are open as usual. People are being out off by the roadworks."

And Emma Wright, partner at Ten Little Monkeys, said: It’s a nightmare.

"Last week was the busiest ever but this week it’s nosedived. There’s no footfall, Wilmslow is dead.

A United Utilities spokeman said: "We apologise to traders for any misunderstanding in regards to compensation.

"Our policy to handle claims for loss of profits following the completion of this scheme is firmly in place and always has been.

"We wish to clarify however we are not offering any additional compensation for the work being carried out.

"Claims will be dealt with on an individual case basis and based on personal details given to us."

"The £6.7million investment will ensure we can continue to deliver high-quality water supplies.

"Our roadworks on Alderley Road are expected to be in place for another four to five weeks."

A lane is closed between Station Road and Manchester Road crossroads and motorists travelling out of the town centre towards Handforth and the A34 are being diverted along Green Lane.
