New data has revealed the worst roads for speeding drivers in Wilmslow. The figures taken from some of the most notorious roads showed the majority of drivers were breaking the speed limit.

The data was compiled using a speed indication device owned by the town council. It showed Morley Green Road was worst hit – with 83 per cent of drivers speeding on the 30mph stretch.

This road was the subject of a campaign last year, when Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson and ex-footballer Mike Summerbee called for action to slow down drivers.

Drivers’ names were not recorded but this will help police target hotspots with speed guns.

PCSO Chris Hopkins presented a report to councillors with data gathered by the device on Altrincham, Adlington, Styal, Handforth and Morley Green Roads.

The majority of motorists were driving faster than the speed limit on all roads except Adlington Road, the only stretch with a limit over 30mph. And 25pc of motorists were travelling at a speed that would warrant prosecution.

The average speed on Altrincham Road was 30.7mph; Adlington Road 39.7mph; Styal Road 32.3mph; Handforth Road 32.9mph and Morley Green Road 35.8mph.

But councillors were concerned about some of the top speeds recorded – 85mph on Adlington Road, 79mph on Handforth Road, 69mph on Morley Green Road, 66mph on Altrincham Road and 59mph on Styal Road.

Town clerk Matthew Jackson said: "The town council will be revisiting sites over the coming months, working with Cheshire police. While the system is currently not recording number plates the data is being provided to Cheshire police traffic division to highlight the issues."

Wilmslow police can provide speed guns for residents’ groups to record registration numbers of offending motorists.
