A teenager who fled Syria as refugees has achieved a clutch of impressive grades in his A-levels.

Yusuf Tayara had to deal with switching from studying in Arabic to English when him and his family arrived here two years ago.

The 18-year-old from Wilmslow achieved outstanding results – two A* grades and one A – at Manchester Grammar School.

He will now read philosophy and economics at the London School of Economics.

Yusuf said: “I am grateful to MGS for the opportunities over the past two years. My aim now is to go into long-term economic development and conflict resolution in the Middle East – a topic that’s obviously very close to my heart.”

His success was shared with George Corner and Nick Maxwell, from Wilmslow.

George, 18, studied biology, chemistry and maths and has gained a place to read chemistry at Durham after achieving two A*s and an A.

He said: “I always knew I wanted to study Science and feels this is largely due to the teachers at MGS.”

He plans to take a gap year in the USA.
