Macclesfield is organising a bash to celebrate the town’s 750th birthday and the granting of the Royal Charter from  Henry III.

To mark 750 years of the Royal Charter events, exhibitions and festivals are taking place throughout the year.

There will be a Charter Celebration Pageant in conjunction with Gawsworth Carnival on July 16-17 and organisers are  looking for schools, youth and community groups to enter a pageant float.

Fred Ford, one of the organisers, said: “We want local groups to become part of the pageantry. We have lots of events planned, with operas, pageants, parades, beating the retreat, a Ceremonial  Mass Arrow Shoot, charter exhibition, steam fayre, Barnaby Festival, hog roasts, and dances.

“We have commemorative 1261 coins and are getting a special coin struck at the pageant, as well as selling the arrows from the  shoot for charity. There will be a record attempt at the world’s biggest tie, Silk FM will be running ‘a song for Macclesfield’ contest.

Macclesfield Express is running a time capsule competition and a Help Clean Up Macclesfield campaign.

“We would like as many people as possible to join  the festivities or show their support by making a donation or volunteering.”
