A community stalwart and former mayor has been given an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Thelma Jackson is one of five people with Macclesfield connections honoured by Her Majesty this week.

Mrs Jackson, who represented the Prestbury Ward on Macclesfield Borough Council from 1999 to 2007, has a date with Buckingham Palace after being recognised for services to the communities in Prestbury, Macclesfield and East Cheshire spanning 40 years.

A councillor on Prestbury Parish Council, the grandmother-of-one, of Lumb Farm, Woodford Lane, also a governor of Prestbury Primary School, who has two sons with husband of 47 years, Jimmy, said: “It’s amazing. I love what I do, but it is it is wonderful that so many people appreciate it.”

Mrs Jackson, was nominated by friends in Prestbury, backed by David Rutley MP and Sir Nick Winterton.

Meanwhile Dr Teresa Anderson, the head of Jodrell Bank’s visitor centre, was honoured with an MBE for her services to astrophysics and explaining new discoveries to young visitors.

She said: “We are so pleased that the observatory is thriving. We feel the science should belong to everyone and it’s really important that people can access the centre. It’s a massive honour to get this.”

Pamela Barnes, from Disley, received an MBE for services to child health and education over 50 years. She co-founded charity Action for Sick Children and has campaigned to make play a vital part of any child’s hospital stay.

Diane Guy was honoured with an MBE for services to the community in Disley over 30 years – through Disley Parish Council, charity fundraising and community projects.

Dana Ross-Wawrzynski, from Adlington, meanwhile has been awarded a Damehood for outstanding achievements in education. The executive headteacher of Altrincham Grammar School for Girls is also chief executive of the Bright Futures Educational Trust.
