A hardy band of pupils and staff braved torrential downpours for a sponsored walk and to mark the final year of Macclesfield High School.

All the Park Lane school’s students and staff – more than 400 – hiked nine miles from the secondary up to Ridgegate Reservoir and back on Monday, despite a deluge of rain.

They wanted to raise £4,000 for Macclesfield Town’s community project and to say a fond farewell to Macclesfield High before it becomes an academy in September.

Kevin Harrison, acting head, who joined them, said: "The children and staff were fantastic. All week we’ll be doing activities to say goodbye to Macclesfield High but there will still be a school on this site serving the children and families of this community."

The walk was organised by year 10 pupils who run events to help the community. Walkers were waved off by Macclesfield Town mascot Roary The Lion and later visited by players. Teachers then treated them to chips and ice cream.

Funds will be used to improve the area around the Moss Rose stadium in partnership with the football club and Cheshire Peaks and Plains.
